Are Dental Implants Worth the Investment of Time and Money?

Missing teeth need to be replaced. Without replacement, you experience difficulties eating and speaking. Any remaining teeth may shift in your mouth, throwing off your bite.

Your jawbone begins to deteriorate, altering the shape of your jaw and your face. One of the best solutions available today is dental implants. But are they really worth the investment of time and money?

What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are small titanium rods that are surgically inserted into your jawbone. These implants support false teeth, whether it is one, a few or even a whole arch. Your unique situation will dictate how many implants are placed. Because it is a surgical procedure, you will require time to heal, a process that can take several months.

During this time, you need to eat a diet of soft foods and take extra care to keep your mouth clean. Once you have healed, your permanent false teeth are placed, and both the appearance and the functions of your mouth are restored.

Benefits of Implants

There are numerous benefits associated with dental implants:

•  Permanent. You never have to remove them for cleaning. Care for implants is exactly the same as your natural teeth.
•  Better digestion. You can chew your food normally, without gaps, and without worry that dentures will slip out of place. And better digestion means better nutrition.
•  Improved speech.
•  Maintain the integrity of your jawbone. When you lose teeth, your jawbone starts to deteriorate. Even with dentures, this still happens.

Your jaw begins to change shape, which alters the shape of your face. If you wear dentures, this means that after a few years, you will need to have a new set made. Because implants are placed directly into your jawbone, they imitate the roots of your teeth, and therefore help to maintain the strength and stability of your jawbone. You will never need a new implant. With proper care, implants will last you a lifetime.

There are a few drawbacks to implants as well:

•  They are more expensive than dentures, especially if you are replacing most, if not all, of your teeth.
•  They require surgery, which then requires several months of healing.
•  If you have lost significant bone mass before considering implants, you will most likely need a bone graft surgery first.

Dental implants are the preferred solution to tooth loss, providing you with a permanent solution. Once placed, you will never need to replace them again. For more information on dental implants, and to find out if they are worth it for you, be sure to contact our office today.
